Geronimo! A Review of Doctor Who S06E08 Let's Kill Hitler

So, let’s get down to reviewing. Sorry, it’s been a bit of break since the airing of the episode and my actual reviewing. I deemed school more important to a blog, so I watched, but did not write. But now, exams are over, so I can blog as much as I like J

So, Let’s Kill Hitler. I think it was a pretty good episode; my favourite bit was, of course, the scene where Mels brings Rory and Amy together. I’m a sucker for Rory-cuteness. Rory was adorable and the sassy Mels was a really good character. The revelation of her being River was clever too, and I particularly loved the line where Mels/River tells Rory, “Oh shut up dad, I’m concentrating on a dress size!”

Rory was absolutely amazing in this episode! He was really manly, and yet so vulnerable at the same time. For example, when he punches Hitler then grabs his gun but doesn’t really know what to do. Also, when he is told to put Hitler in the cupboard, Arthur Darvill displays comedy gold.

However, as good as the reveal was about River, I didn’t feel like it was very important. Maybe I’m just not used to Alex Kingston’s River Song trying to kill the Doctor. It just didn’t seem right to me, all the Judas tree poison lipstick, the jumping out the window, the killing soldiers with regeneration energy flying from her hair, or the giving up of her regenerations. The revelation seemed to just be pushover so that Alex Kinston could have the line “I’m going to wear lots of jodhpurs!” Also, because we have now seen how Alex Kingston’s River was created, does this no longer mean that we will see the Doctor’s and River’s timelines going backwards and forwards simultaneously, but will jump around?

Hmmm... Cleavage much?
Another thing that annoys me is the image choice for previous companions. They were promo pictures. Couldn’t they have gotten something more natural? Like them smiling around the console or something. I didn’t like it. I also think they should have made Amelia more of a hologram for that scene. Just my thoughts.

Also, did the Doctor start World War Two? Maybe? He says to Hitler, “The British are coming.” With the intent to scare him, so perhaps the Doctor was the cause for it. I wouldn’t be surprised. And didn’t anybody else think that the guard looked remarkably like Captain Jack? And one of the people at the restaurant look like Sohpie Owens?

Favourite Quotes:
“Hello! Sorry, Doctor not following this. Doctor very lost. You never said I was hot!?” – The Doctor
“Why don’t I know you? I danced with everyone at the wedding. The women were brilliant. The men were a bit shy” – The Doctor
“I’d love to, you know. He’s my favourite guy. You know, he’s gay.” / “I’m not gay.” / “Yes you are.” – Amy/Rory

“You will feel a tingling sensation then death. Remain calm while you death is implemented.” – Antibodies
“Where are we?” / “A room.” / “What room?” / “I don’t know what room! I haven’t memorised every room in the universe, I’ve yet to have a day off.” – Amy/The Doctor/Rory
“Shut up Hitler!” / “Rory, take Hitler and put him in that cupboard over there. Now, do it.” / “Right, putting Hitler in the cupboard. Cupboard, Hitler. Hitler, cupboard. Hitler...” / “But I am the Fuehrer!” / “Right, in you go!” / “Who are you?” – Rory/The Doctor/Hitler

“Does anybody else find this day just a bit difficult? I’m getting this sort of banging in my head.” / “Yeah I think that’s Hitler in the cupboard.” – Rory/Amy
“Poisoned me. I’m fine. Well, no, I’m dying. But I’ve got a plan.” / “What plan?” / “Mmm, not dying, see, fine.” – The Doctor/Amy
“Extractor fans on! Oh that works!” – The Doctor
“Can you ride a motorbike?” / “I expect so. It’s that sort of day.” – Amy/Rory

“Regeneration disabled. You will be dead in 32 minutes.” / “Unless I’m cured, yeah?” / “There is no cure. You will be dead in 32 minutes.” / “Why do you keep saying that?” / “Because you will be dead in 32 minutes.” / “You see, there you go again. Basically skipping 31 whole minutes when I’m absolutely fine. Scottish, that’s all I’m saying.” / “You will be fine for 31 minutes. You will be dead in 32 minutes.” / ... / “You will no die now. You will die in 32 minutes.” – Amelia interface/The Doctor
“Ladies and gentlemen. I don’t have a thing to wear. Take off your clothes.” – River Song

“Okay. I’m trapped inside a giant replica robot of my wife. I’m really trying not to see this as a metaphor.” – Rory
“How can we be in here. How do we fit?” / “Miniaturisation ray.” / “How would you know that?” / “Well, there was a ray, and we were miniaturised.” – Amy/Rory
“You should never waste time when you haven’t any. Time is not the boss of you. Rule 408.” – The Doctor
“Are you serious?” / “Never knowingly. Never knowingly be serious, rule 27. You really should write these down.” – River/The Doctor
“Never run when you’re scared. Rule seven.” – The Doctor
“Rule one. The Doctor lies.” – The Doctor

“She did kill me. Then she used her remaining lives to bring me back. As first dates go, I’d say that was mixed signals.” – The Doctor

Time

This is a poem I wrote a while back. I was going to write a Doctor Who FanFiction about the Doctor giving River her diary and insert the poem into the story, but I doubt that it ill happen anymore. Here it is :)

Time.
Time can run
Away from us.

Time can make us feel
Guilty that we didn’t spend it
With one person.

Time can lengthen
Days needed
To be cut short.

Time can shorten
Moments that will be
Remembered for eternity.

Time can be
Our enemy: cruelly
Cutting lives short.

And Time can be
Our friend: giving us
Moments like these to treasure.

Until next time, Adios Amigos!

Geronimo! A Review of Doctor Who S06E07 - A Good Man Goes To War.

Well, I just loved this episode. How good was it! Actually, for me, it went really fast, I don’t know why, maybe because I was just waiting for River’s identity to be revealed.

I do have a few niggles, as I always do, one of them being River being Melody. Ok, the way they did it, and how it was written was brilliant, but I find the actual concept of her being Amy and Rory’s child really predictable. It’s Steven Moffat writing for goodness sake! I was expecting something really elaborate and beautifully crafted, not something so predictable. Also, why was River so scared of the Doctor finding out her identity? Perhaps it what the Doctor did on that day, and the courage that River had to bring up to go there to tell him that was the tough part – she had to suffer under his anger.

What I find curious about her identity is that she is part Time Lady. (On a side note, the amount of people who say she’s part Time Lord really pisses me off...SHE’S NOT A MAN) The Doctor must find her in America, after she has escaped the suit and told her about regeneration. Remember she says something like, “I’m dying. But it’s OK, I can fix that.” Therefore she must know about regeneration from someone, not the Silence, otherwise she would forget it. I am really curious about how many times she gets to regenerate, if so, she is really badass to last so long in her last body. Or she’s really careful to craftily make every monster in the universe scared of her. What also intrigues me is what the Doctor goes off to do when he leaved them. Does he go and do all those things that River said they did in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. Also, I am excited to find out where River was taken.

Another thing I thought of is, do you think that River can read Gallifreyan? Do you think that the Doctor taught her to read Gallifreyan and she was therefore able to read the Doctor’s name on his cot? Or do you think that she just identified it as Gallifreyan and the Doctor tells her late on. I personally think that it’s the latter reason, just because of what was said/shown in Silence in the Library.

It was really cool that the Doctor took River out for her birthday. You don’t catch onto it after just one watch, I had to watch it multiple times for me to realise that Melody/River was born on that day and the Doctor had remembered to take River out to see Stevie Wonder out of his time.

The Doctor speaks baby!

What year is it? I would presume that it is in the future due to the fact that the church ha moved on and supports gay marriage.

The Doctor really does have an endless supply of Sonic Screwdrivers. Rory had one and so did the Doctor.

RORY WAS BRILLIANT! He was always my favourite, but after last episode I was looking for some confirmation that he was actually a man and wasn’t trying to impress anyone – he was trying to save his wife and baby. He had my favourite line of the whole thing, “Oh God, I was going to be cool.”

I liked all the extra companions.
Lorna bucket – doesn’t everybody run with the Doctor. He might have had no idea who she was and in his mind went “Ok, I have no idea who the hell you are, but I have run with nearly every person that I’ve met, so I’ll say we ran a lot” ... Or if he hadn’t actually done that yet with Lorna so he just said that they ran, then went back into Lorna’s childhood and made her run.

Vestra and Jenny – two lesbians, one a Victorian London detective from underground and the other, a servant. You cannot get more awesome than that. And they had kick ass sword skills.

Commander Strax – a nurse Sontaran. Need I say more? My favourite of all the extra companions as his comments about breastfeeding Melody/River. Also, when he comments to Rory that he’s just a nurse, I feel that there should have been some dialogue between Rory and him saying that Rory is a nurse too.

Dorium – he’s old, he’s fat, he’s blue ... and apparently owes the Doctor a debt. (You could see a tiny flaw in the make up actually, the Blue kept on rubbing off his neck onto his collar to expose his skin... Oh well, you could just say that the blue people were diseased. In any case, it didn’t really matter once his head was chopped off) And Dorium had an awesome laugh.

I didn’t really like the Headless Monks, nor the cleric they converted. He was annoying. The Thin One was much more likable. The attack prayer was the best bit about them. I was kind of expecting something really creepy when Dorium’s head was cut off – perhaps see the stump twist into a knot.

I liked the Doctor’s playfulness when rescuing Amy, when he’s on loudspeaker and imitating the spit fires.

I thought that Karen Gillan’s acting was alright in this episode. She was pretty good for the majority of it, however in the bit where she notices the stars on the cot was completely crap. She didn’t sound convincing at all. Perhaps it was the script – the “Oh my God” was perhaps not needed.
I didn’t like Kovarian. I know that she’s a well respected actress and everything, but I just didn’t like how she portrayed her character – I didn’t really feel like she was bad. Perhaps it was the “PUSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH” from the last episode that put me off.

When the Doctor was escaping from the “Monk’s stage” and he uses the Sonic Screwdriver, the echo is really loud. Surely some clerics would hear him, or at least see him like Lorna did.

The use of Captain Avery and Toby was really short and I thought a bit pointless, they could have just targeted the ship with Spit Fires instead and been just as effective. Also, isn’t Toby meant to be connected to a life support system? I’m also thinking that they must have landed there somehow, so doesn’t that mean that the Siren should be there? She’s have a jolly good time with all the decapitated heads.

Is it just me, or did the boots of all the clerics/soldiers look like ugg boots?

I liked how they made the Doctor realise that he is as good as/better than a weapon. I also like how that the Doctor now knows that he can save River and so his confidence has been pepped up.

I loved the poem. In fact, I’m going to put it in here for good measure.

Demons run
When a good man goes to war.
Night will fall and drown the sun,
When a good man goes to war.

Friendship dies
And true love lies,
Night will fall,
And the dark will rise.
When a good man goes to war.

Demons run,
But count the cost.
The battle’s won,
But the child is lost.
